What does it stand for? As a general guide the rules are as follows: 1. Shower proof – Does not mean you can go in the shower. In fact all watch-makers state that no watch should be used in the shower, spa, hot-tub or steamroom. Heat is the wristwatch enemy, combined with water will absolutely mess with the best of watches. Shower proof simply means if you are out in the rain wearing your watch, it should be OK.
2. Water Resistant to 30 meters – Does not mean you can use it as a diving watch. 3ATM = 30 meters, 5ATM = 50 meters etc. It is simply a pressure range for the seals on a watch.
3. If you happen to be in a diving situation, most recreational divers only go to 12 meters however they should still use proper divers watches which are resistant to 100 meters + (10 ATM) of pressure.
