Basil Seeds – (Ocimum basilicum)
Basil is a wonderful versatile herb, especially delicious in tomato dishes, pastas and pizzas.
How to Grow
When to plant: All year round indoors
Prepare: To provide some drainage, place pebbles in to the bottom of the windowsill pot before putting the soil in.
Put the soil pellet into a large bowl and add about three times its volume of lukewarm water. After 10 minutes you will have enough soil to fill your windowsill pot. Loosen the soil with a table fork and put most of your new soil into the pot
Sow: Sprinkle a few seeds in clumps 5cm apart. Lightly cover the seeds with 5mm of the leftover soil. Water and place the pot in a warm well lit spot in the home or office. To maintain the humidity cover the windowsill pot with cling film. Water regularly, just enough to keep moist. Remove the cling film when the first shoots appear. You'll see the first sign of seedlings in 10 days. When the plants are 5cm tall, thin to leave only the strongest seedlings. This allows the basil to have plenty of space to develop. The surplus plants can be planted into another pot or direct into the garden from mid spring.
Care: Feed with half strength liquid fertiliser every 10-14 days to promote healthy growth. Your fresh herbs will be ready to use in 8-12 weeks.
Harvest: Enjoy freshly picked herbs 3 or 4 times a week to encourage new growth and bushy plant.
Basil is best used fresh. It does not dry well, however it does freeze successfully.
