Is Sustainability Sustainable? We went to find out!

Last week we attended a Macarthur BEC Breakfast but this breakfast was very different to most events we attend because it was actually run in the form of a Great Debate where the topic was ‘Is sustainability Sustainable’.

The debate was hosted by Adam Spencer who you probably know from Triple J, Good News Week and The Glasshouse. What you probably didn’t know is that Adam Spencer holds a first class honors degree in Pure Mathematics and is a hardcore debater. He was actually voted “Best Speaker in the World” at the World University Debating Championships. He is so passionate about debating that when the first speaker defined sustainability at the debate this morning Adam said that a debate definition is “dirty, sexy talk” to him.

Teams Captains were Ed Wacarba, Sustainability Consultant, and former Sustainability Manager for Asia Pacific atc Interface Flor operating out of Picton. The CEO of InterfaceFlor Ray Anderson has been named by Time Magazine as an International Hero of The Environment. Ed has incorporated cradle to grave analysis to the Australian operations resulting in savings of hundreds of thousands of Dollars. Ed is the current Chair of GECA. For the negative, Captain is Professor Bobby Bannerjee, Professor of Management and Associate Dean of Research, Business, at University of Western Sydney. Bobby has published over 100 publications including articles in highly ranked international journals, chapters in books and conference papers, and is the recipient of 29 internal and external research grants. His book Corporate Social Responsibility: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (Edward Elgar, UK) was published in November 2007 is a still a hot topic for discussion.

It was a fantastic event and it really got us thinking about sustainability. Oh and the answer is YES, sustainability is definately sustainable!
